Mexico City Wants to Become the Next Times Square

The plan is as big as this mammoth city: Turn a seedy metro hub into Mexico City's Times Square; clear swarms of feisty vendors and remodel the historic Alameda Central; illuminate the plazas and walkways of a park twice the size of New York's Central Park.

Mexico City's government is trying to transform one of the world's largest cities by beautifying public spaces, parks and monuments buried beneath a sea of honking cars, street hawkers, billboards and grime following decades of dizzying urban growth.

It's time to tame the city. Today is about giving the city back to pedestrians.

- Juan Carlos de Leo Gandara, head of the Iberoamerican University's sustainable urban projects

Despite the challenges, the ambitious, multimillion-dollar program carried out by former center-left Mayor Marcelo Ebrard and continued by his successor, Miguel Angel Mancera, is winning praise from urban planners and many residents. And it's turning the metropolis into an experiment in how to soften urban sprawl.

"It's time to tame the city," said Juan Carlos de Leo Gandara, head of the Iberoamerican University's sustainable urban projects. "Today is about giving the city back to pedestrians."

In the Alameda, made iconic in the Diego Rivera mural "Dream of a Sunday Afternoon in the Alameda," concrete sidewalks were replaced by marble, and makeshift vendor stands were kicked out ? a renovation that cost about $18.7 million. Instead of a motley patchwork of folding tables and tarps, the newly opened park, anchored by the art nouveau Palacio de Bellas Artes theater, is a sea of greenery and calm in the midst of racing traffic.

"It used to be very dark, with no lighting. It really wasn't a place to bring my son," said Alma Rosa Romero, a 32-year-old housewife standing by the new dancing-water fountains, holding her child's hand. "Now it's beautiful."

Other completed projects include a once-neglected plaza with an Arc de Triumph-style monument to Mexico's 1910 revolution, which has been remade at a cost of $28.6 million from a homeless encampment to an oasis where families frolic and children run through spurts of water gushing out of the pavement. The copper dome of what started out as the country's Congress building is newly polished and gleaming.

Downtown, at the Chapel of the Immaculate Conception of Tlaxcoaque, the city has installed multi-colored fountains that light up at night and replaced a parking lot with a larger plaza for pedestrians. The city has also converted Francisco I. Madero street in the historic center into a pedestrian walkway stretching to the Zocalo, the plaza that's home to the National Palace and massive Metropolitan Cathedral. And under a popular bridge near the hip neighborhood of Condesa, the city made way for a taco joint and a playground.

"A city where people go out to the streets is safe, happier and raises the quality of life," said Daniel Escotto, chief architect of Mexico City's Public Areas Office, which was founded in 2008 to manage urban renewal. "We are renovating floors, facades and adding plants and lighting and more elements that can shape this concept."

Yet in a city defined in many ways by its disorder, the plan is also being slammed by those who take pride in surviving the urban jungle.

"Yes it's safer, and it's renovated, but what happens to the emblem of Mexico City?" said Baltazar Romeo, 47, a hospital worker eating a sandwich at the newly remodeled Alameda. Gone were the street performers who once dressed as the Three Wise Men during Christmas and charged tips for photos with children. "The city is becoming soulless," Romeo said.

One of the flagship renovation projects is the once-seedy, swarming Glorieta de Insurgentes, a roundabout and metro station in central Mexico City that sees hundreds of thousands of commuters pour through every day.

The circular plaza was sunk to let pedestrians stream below busy thoroughfares and catch their trains or buses or just hang out. Around its rim careen cars in a roundabout that briefly merges two of the city's biggest thoroughfares, the mighty Insurgentes and Chapultepec avenues.

When the plaza was built in 1969, the city's top priority was moving an onslaught of cars and people from one point to another. Highways and beltways elsewhere went up to cope with the population boom, and sprawl spread farther out. Once-famous and safe streets and plazas suffered from neglect by planners and became slum-like neighborhoods people avoided after sunset. A brown haze covered the new skyline as motorists became the focus of the new infrastructure.

The Insurgentes roundabout turned into a place to hurry through. Homeless people took over abandoned warehouses nearby while surrounding office and apartment buildings fell into disrepair. Many of the plaza's shops became sleazy Internet cafes cowering beneath giant billboards.

"It couldn't be more hostile to public life or pedestrian life," said Ken Greenberg, a Toronto-based architect and urban designer who recently visited Mexico. "The whole thing just has a kind of very harsh feeling of a highway right in the middle of the city."

Urban designers are now seeking to infuse the chaos with the glitzy excitement of Times Square or London's Piccadilly Circus. Sixty-foot cylinders covered with circular screens streaming LED tickers have already been erected. The crabgrass-filled flower beds and low benches used as skateboard launches have been bulldozed for a sleek open-air look bathed in white, patterned concrete.

The makeover is meant to create a more appealing space for commuters using bikes and public transit in a city that won infamy as the world's most painful for commuters in a 2011 IBM survey.

"What Mexico City needs is to emphasize its identity through its public spaces," Escotto said.

The government says the Insurgentes project will also debut a new model for restricting advertising to designated spots. In 2010, local government banned advertisements on all public and private buildings, threatening a $9,000 fine for those who refused to comply. Two years later, however, the city is still blanketed by billboards.

Future projects include a cleanup of 67 bridges around the city and more lighting for plazas and walkways throughout Chapultepec Park, Mexico City's grand urban green space.

Some projects, including the Insurgentes roundabout, are being completed with the help of private funds. The roundabout renovation includes $4.5 million from 15 advertising companies that are erecting the giant LED screens. Critics worry the arrangement will benefit private companies more than city residents. Much of the beautification of the historic center was paid for by telecommunications billionaire Carlos Slim.

Some wonder whether Mancera, who is from Ebrard's party, will continue the effort and whether the city has the money to maintain its improvements. The question for this teeming city is whether its attempt to clean up will hold or whether the sprawl will ultimately prove more powerful.

"How is this work going to look in the next five months, or five years?" asked De Leo Gandara of the Iberoamerican University. "Will they preserve it? Will it still be clean? Are they keeping it together or is it forgotten again?"

Top Five Stories of 2012 - #2 - Windows 8 and the Surface RT

To round out the rest of 2012, Windows Phone Daily is continuing our annual special edition of Top Five. Every day until the new year, we will be going back in time to recap a momentous 2012 for Microsoft and Windows Phone. Read Story #5, #4, and #3.

Despite the seismic activity surrounding Windows Phone 8 throughout the year, it should not come as a surprise that Microsoft prioritized the latest version of Windows proper this year. What should have come as a surprise was just how deftly Microsoft was able to renew their disparate services into a cohesive new ecosystem, completely reinvent their flagship operating system, and challenge the more affordable tablet market in a matter of months.

Looking back, we're surprised that Windows 8 was first shown off in mid-2011 during the D9 conference. Make no mistake though, because 2012 was the year of Windows 8 for Microsoft. After revealing that CES 2012 would be its last appearance at the show, Microsoft went on to host a series of hush-hush events that kept the media on their toes. Not only did the company unveil a reimagined version of their long-standing Windows logo,?but?a few weeks later the Consumer Preview was released for download online also accompanied by the soft-launch of the Windows Store.

In late May, Microsoft released its final pre-release build of Windows 8 to the public. That milestone release would lead to a huge June for the company. Microsoft of course attended E3 2012, and during its keynote unveiled Xbox SmartGlass ? an app which would unite mobile devices and Windows 8 devices alike to connect to the Xbox 360. The event was also where Microsoft announced Xbox Music, though details would not arrive for several months after. Shortly after their impressive event in Los Angeles, Microsoft quietly announced a surprise event for June 18th. Scheduled just days before a key Windows Phone event, there was much speculation about what this new event could be. in the end, Microsoft revealed the Surface RT and Surface Pro ? the first computers the company had built in its entire existence.

After releasing Windows 8's enticing upgrade price, the focus finally shifted towards launch day for Windows 8 and the Surface RT. Microsoft helped build up some attention through viral street art promoting the Surface, and eventually graduated to television commercials. Finally, October 26th came along and Microsoft held a number of massive events around the globe in celebration of the launch. None were as big as in New York City, where Microsoft crafted a 'Microtropolis' city composed of nearly all Windows 8 powered tablets and PCs to be released. In its first month on sale, Windows 8 sold 40 million licenses.

Come back every day until New Year's Day for the rest of our Top Five Stories of 2012!

Mixed results for college hoops in the Bay Area on Saturday

With four teams in action Saturday, California?s Bay Area shifted its attention away from the San Francisco 49ers and Stanford?s upcoming bowl game and over to college hoops, where fans got mixed results. Take a look at the recap below:

No. 1 Duke 90, Santa Clara 77

The Broncos kept it close early, trailing by only two at halftime, but Duke?s size buried Santa Clara in foul trouble in the second half. Senior Kevin Foster was impressive with 29 points on the afternoon, including 18 in the first half that almost single-handedly kept Santa Clara in the game.

Against the nation?s No. 1 team, an up-tempo style helped to minimize Duke?s size advantage in the first half and Foster?s hot shooting was key. But Foster picked up his third foul less than 10 seconds into the second half and the Blue Devils found a way to neutralize Santa Clara?s full-court game and grind it down to a half-court bout. Seth Curry?s hot shooting overextended the Santa Clara defense and pushed it out to the perimeter, opening up opportunities for center Mason Plumlee on the inside.

It was a valiant Santa Clara effort, but Duke proved to be too much. The tough loss showed that the Broncos are likely the fourth-best team in the WCC, trailing national power Gonzaga, St. Mary?s, and BYU.

San Francisco 93, Dominican Cal 76

Cole Dickerson had a double-double of 30 points and 10 rebounds as the Dons cruised to a win Saturday night by dominating in nearly every key statistical category. San Francisco shot 56 percent from the floor and outrebounded Dominican 42-25. It is a bounce-back win for the Dons after going 1-2 in the Diamond Head Classic in Hawaii over the Christmas holiday.

They open conference play on Jan. 2 against Santa Clara.

Stanford 65, Lafayette 59

Stanford was never able to put Lafayette away, thanks in large part to 11-of-19 shooting from three-point range for the Leopards. Stanford?s zone defense had a difficult time rotating to shooters and was giving too much space on the perimeter, allowing a smaller Lafayette team to stay in the game.

Poor Cardinal shooting from the perimeter (3-of-19) only amplified the offensive problems, but a late-game push to get the ball inside to junior Dwight Powell exploited Stanford?s size advantage. Had the Cardinal not outrebounded Lafayette by such a large 42-24 margin, we likely would have had an upset at Maples Pavilion.

Keep an eye on Josh Huestis, who continues to be an impact player and a complement to Powell on the interior. He narrowly missed a double-double Saturday, scoring eight points and grabbing 14 rebounds.

Harvard 67, California 62

Cal ran into many of the same problems against Harvard that Stanford did against Lafayette. Laurent Rivard and Wesley Saunders combined for 37 points, including 7-of-15 shooting from three-point range to extend the California defense and power an upset Saturday. Harvard was patient offensively and controlled the clock in the second half to dictate the pace and force the Bears into uncomfortable half-court sets.

Allen Crabbe turned in another high-scoring performance with 27 points on 10-of-18 shooting, but a short Cal rotation hurt Mike Montgomery?s team down the stretch. Both Crabbe and Justin Cobbs had bouts with cramps late in the second half, likely a result of Harvard milking each offensive possession and forcing Cal to play 35 seconds of defense nearly every time down the floor.

The Crimson continue to get production from freshman point guard Siyani Chambers, if not as a scorer than as a facilitator. He shot just 2-of-15 from the floor Saturday, but had nine assists and just two turnovers.

Rare genetic faults identified in families with bowel cancer

Dec. 30, 2012 ? Rare DNA faults in two genes have been strongly linked to bowel cancer by Oxford University researchers, who sequenced the genomes of people from families with a strong history of developing the disease.

The researchers sequenced the entire DNA genomes of 20 people from families with a strong history of bowel cancer. Eight of the 20 people had developed bowel cancer, while the rest had a first-degree relative who had developed the disease. The findings are published in the journal Nature Genetics.

They found that everyone who had a faulty POLE or POLD1 gene developed bowel cancer or had a precancerous growth in the bowel.

To confirm their findings they then looked for faults in these two genes in almost 4,000 people with bowel cancer, and 6,700 people without the disease.

Neither of the genetic faults was found in people without bowel cancer. However, 12 people with a fault in the POLE gene were found in the bowel cancer group, and one person had a POLD1 gene fault.

The POLD1 fault was also found to increase the risk of getting womb cancer and possibly brain cancer, with seven people in the study being diagnosed with womb cancer and one developing two brain tumours.

Professor Ian Tomlinson, who led the research at the Wellcome Trust Centre for Human Genetics at Oxford University, said: 'These are two rare faults, but if you inherit them your chance of bowel cancer is high. By testing people with a strong family history of the disease for these, we can identify those who are at high risk and try to prevent the disease by using colonoscopy and other methods.'

POLE and POLD1 are genes involved in processes that repair damage to DNA. Without these genes functioning properly, affected individuals can build up damage in their DNA which accumulates and it is thought this may lead to changes that cause bowel cancer.

'This research highlights how much more we still have to find out about the rare gene faults that can increase a person's risk of bowel cancer,' said Dr Julie Sharp, senior science information manager at Cancer Research UK, which part-funded the work.

Daimler CEO wants Mercedes to regain top spot by 2020: paper

FRANKFURT (Reuters) - Daimler Chief Executive Dieter Zetsche hopes to return the automaker to the top spot in the premium car market ahead of Audi and BMW by 2020, he said in an interview with a German paper.

"I am confident that we will be ahead of our rivals by 2020 at the latest," he told Boersen-Zeitung in an interview published on Saturday.

He said he hoped to reach that target during his time in office. Zetsche's contract currently runs until December 2013 but is expected to be extended by three years in February.

Daimler has already promised 2 billion euros ($2.6 billion)in cost cuts at the Mercedes-Benz division by the end of 2014 after warning in October that it would miss its operating profit target this year by 1 billion euros.

Zetsche told the paper Mercedes had failed to keep up with its rivals in the compact car market and in China.

(AP) ? Fiscal cliff? Recession? Not in Asia, where the first countries to see 2013 dawn will enthusiastically welcome the new year.

Increasingly democratic Myanmar will have a public countdown for the first time. Jakarta plans a huge street party befitting Indonesia's powering economy.

In Sydney, eager revelers camped over Sunday night on the shores of the harbor to get the best vantage points as 1.5 million are expected to see the fireworks show centered on the Sydney Harbor Bridge.

In Hong Kong, this year's 12.5 million Hong Kong dollar ($1.6 million) fireworks display was being billed by organizers as the biggest ever in the southern Chinese city. Police expect as many as 100,000 people to watch, local news reports said.

The buoyant economies of the Asia-Pacific are prepared to party with renewed optimism despite the so-called fiscal cliff threatening to reverberate globally from the United States and the tattered economy of Europe.

Celebrations were planned around the world later Tuesday, with hundreds of thousands expected to fill Times Square in New York City to watch the drop of a Waterford crystal-studded ball.

One day after dancing in the snow to celebrate the first anniversary of leader Kim Jong Un's ascension to supreme commander, North Koreans were preparing Monday to mark the arrival of the new year, marked as "Juche 102" on North Korean calendars - the number referring to 102 years since the birth of North Korean founder Kim Il Sung. "Juche" means self-reliance, the North Korean ideology of independence promoted by Kim, who was born in 1912. His grandson now rules North Korea.

In New Delhi, the festive mood was marred by the death Saturday of a young rape victim.

Several hotels, clubs and residents associations in Indian capital decided to cancel planned festivities and asked people to light candles to express their solidarity with the victim whose plight sparked public rallies for women's safety.

"Let there be no New Year celebrations across the country. It will be a major tribute to the departed soul," said Praveen Khandelwal, the secretary-general of the Confederation of All India Traders, an umbrella group of traders who run shops and businesses across the country.

In a field in Myanmar's largest city, Yangon, workers early Monday were testing a giant digital countdown screen with the backdrop of the revered Shwedagon pagoda.

Arranged by local Forever Media group and Index Creative Village, a Thai major event organizer, the celebration will be the first public New Year countdown in Myanmar, a country ruled for almost five decades by military regimes that discouraged or banned big public gatherings.

"We are planning this public new year event because we want residents of Yangon to enjoy the public countdown like in other countries," said Win Thura Hlaing, managing director of Forever Blossom company, a subsidiary of Forever Media.

With live music performances by singers and celebrities, colorful light shows, food stalls, fireworks and other events at the venue, the countdown is expected to draw 50,000 people, Win Thura Hlaing said.

Jakarta's street party will center on a 7-kilometer (4-mile) main thoroughfare closed to all traffic from nightfall until after midnight. Workers were erecting 16 large stages along the normally car-clogged, 8-lane highway through the heart of the city. Indonesia's booming economy is a rare bright spot amid global gloom and bringing prosperity ? or the hope of it ? to Indonesians.

Spirits in the capital have been further raised by the election of a new, populist governor, who is pledging action in tackling the city's massive infrastructure problems.

Sydney Lord Mayor Clover Moore said about 1.5 million spectators were expected to line the harbor to watch the 6.6 million Australian dollar ($6.9 million) fireworks display, while another 2 million Australians among a population of 22 million would watch it on television.

"This is really putting Australia on the map in terms of welcoming people to the new year," Moore told reporters at the harbor before the event.

Thousands lined the harbor shore in festive crowds under a blue summer sky by late afternoon, their number undiminished by Australian government warnings that the Washington deadlock on the U.S. debt crisis was partly to blame for a slowing Australian economy.

Australian pop singer Kylie Minogue is host for the event.

Florida tourist Melissa Sjostedt was among the thousands gathered near a southern pylon of the bridge. She said seeing the fireworks would fulfill an ambition started a decade ago when she read about them in a National Geographic magazine.

"Ever since that, I've always wanted to see this for real, live, in person," the 30-year-old said.

Despite the somber mood in the Philippines due to devastation from a recent typhoon, a key problem for authorities remained how to prevent revelers from setting off illegal huge firecrackers ? including some labeled "Goodbye Philippines" and "Bin Laden" ? that maim and injure hundreds of Filipinos each year, many of them children.

A government scare tactic, which involved doctors displaying brutal-looking surgical scalpels used for amputations of firecracker blast victims, has not fully worked in the past so health officials came up with a novel idea: Go Gangnam style.

A government health official, Eric Tayag, donned the splashy outfit of South Korean viral star PSY and danced to the tune of his Youtube-hit "Gangnam Style" video while preaching against the use of illegal firecrackers on TV, in schools and in public arenas.

"The campaign has become viral," Tayag said. "We've asked kids and adults to stay away from big firecrackers and just dance the Gangnam and they're doing it."

The number of firecracker injuries has gone down since the campaign was launched early this month.

Hong Kong feng shui master Raymond Lo predicted 2013 would be less turbulent than 2012 because the Chinese new year in February will usher in the year of the snake, bringing an end to the year of the dragon, which was associated with water. Water is one of the five elements in feng shui theory, the Chinese practice of arranging objects and choosing dates to improve luck.

"Water is fear. So that's why we have had so much turbulence especially in the winter months," such as doomsday prophecies, school shootings and concerns about the fiscal cliff, said Lo.

"But the good news is that the coming year of the snake is the first time that fire has come back since 2007. Fire actually is the opposite to water, fire is happiness. So therefore the year of the snake is a much more optimistic year. So you can see signs of economic recovery now," he added.

"The positive thing is that people are very optimistic, therefore it will have a very strong drive on the economic recovery. We expect the stock market will do well, the property market will do well," Lo said.

On three consecutive Saturdays, Jan. 5, 12 and 19 from 9 am until 12 p.m., members of BTU will be on-hand at the Monroe County Environmental Education Center located at 8050 Running Valley Road in Bartonsville, right off Route 611, to teach their favorite and highly effective Pocono trout-catching patterns! The chief instructor for this course is PA State Champion fly-tier Scott Cesari, and he will be joined by the Master Fly-Tiers of the Brodhead TU Chapter. SOCCER

NEW CHALLENGER SOCCER DIVISION

Our new Challenger Soccer division will be presented through our partnerships with the Pocono Family YMCA and the Pocono Mountain School District and join the current offerings of baseball and basketball. These programs are for youth who are developmentally and/or physically challenged. Our newest offering is designed to help players to enjoy the sport of soccer in a fun, safe and non-competitive environment. Challenger sports opportunities began six years ago with the baseball team sponsored through our partnership with the Big Pocono Little League and has had terrific response. With our partnership organizations and sponsorships the Challenger crew is able to provide the opportunities for all kids to be participants, rather than spectators cheering for their siblings. In order to be able to move forward, we need the support of local companies for sponsorships of the four new soccer teams and donations from the community to help purchase equipment for the teams. Our goal is $1,500 of which $1,000 is via sponsorships. We have already received a commitment for one team sponsorship. Our season begins on Sunday, Oct. 6 and runs through Sunday, Nov. 11. If you have questions about our organization, please email bob.cooney@yahoo.com or call 973-896-4208.

travel & leisure: Super Camping Suggestions For Making A Great Trip

Going camping? Stay tuned for some information about a few of the challenges you may encounter. Although in general camping is pretty simple and safe, it is still important to take some time to prepare yourself for such an adventure. Keep reading for smart tips.

You should be sure you have survival and first aid kits. These can be useful for any situation and can extend your trip. Your kit can also prevent situations from becoming worse and make it easier to get an individual in need to safety. Always make sure that your cell phone is with you when you get to your campsite, and it should be fully charged. You might want to bring an extra battery as well just in case your original runs low. A cell phone will be your best friend in the event of an emergency, so keep it charged and available.

Bring some entertaining items for your trip. Of course, if you bring too many electronics, you may defeat the purpose of the trip, but there is nothing better than sitting beside a lake reading, or listening to music beside a camp fire at night. Bring duct tape with you since it can help you in many situations. This can help to seal and protect your tent and even protect your body.

Duct tape is a valuable item to carry for many different situations. You can use to help seal leaks and rips and hold together important things that break. It can hold your shoes together if they fall apart, and you can even use it in case of emergencies for a temporary bandage or sling. Be certain you are prepared for any event when you're camping. While it's crucial to plan ahead for things, sometimes things don't go according to plan. Weather can change, situations can arise, injuries or illness can strike. Try not to take unnecessary risks that can yield injury or illness. Remember that you, your possessions and your family members are inevitably going to get dirty. Don't stress out when it inevitably happens. Enjoy your time and don't afraid to be messy. You can go back to normal when you go home.

Take some preventative steps in order to avoid inadvertently draining the batteries in your flashlights during your next camping adventure. You can easily press the "on" switch on a flashlight when digging in your camping bag. To prevent draining the batteries, place them in your flashlight backwards. That way, the flashlight cannot possibly drain the batteries if the ON button is bumped. Carry a handkerchief or bandanna while camping. This single fabric piece can be used as a carrying bag, hand towel, paper towel, potholder, and blotter. As you can see, a handkerchief can serve many different purposes on a camping trip.

Before you head out on a long camping expedition, pack and then unpack your bags a few times first. This way, you can find the way that all of your gear fits into the bags and help reduce the chances that you have forgotten to pack anything. Bring along an emergency survival kit, and keep it on you for the duration of your camping trip. A survival kit should include items like a flare gun, matches that are waterproof, a knife and other items you think you may need. For any life threatening situation, these items may be the only thing standing between you and disaster. Your kit should not be left behind at the camp site, but should be carried with you wherever you go.

Consult your physician if you plan to go camping with a significant medical issue. There could be issues that you aren't aware of. You may need to take some extra precautions that you didn't consider. Duct tape is an interesting item to be included in your inventory while camping. It is nearly as useful while camping as it is around the house. You can slap a piece of it on a leaking air mattress. Also, it can help to seal any tears, which can make your item usable for the duration of your trip. If you plan to take a long hike, be sure to place some on feet to avoid developing blisters. In a pinch, it can even serve as a bandage for injuries. Figure out how to use a compass and read a map in advance. Even if you are familiar with your intended campsite, you could still get lost because many areas look the same. This skill can potentially save your life.

A utility knife can serve you well on your camping trip. The versatility of a utility knife makes it priceless when you are out camping. Bring one to slip into your pocket and throw a backup knife into your bag. You never know when your utility knife will come in handy!

Though you should already understand this, you are a visitor to natural surroundings. Do not leave your campsite filthy or throw trash around. When you're done camping, leave your campsite looking as it did before you got there. If you respect nature, it will last for years. When you go camping, check to be sure there are restrooms available. There might not be a portable toilet. All you need is a secluded area to relieve yourself. Always pack enough toilet paper, or you may learn about leaves the hard way.

An orange peel can help to avoid insect bites. Don't worry if you forget the bug spray. Seasoned campers suggest that you can rub your skin with the inside of an ripe orange peel. Mosquitoes hate the smell and will fly away for a few good hours; and you will be free of the nuisance. Camping is a timeless pastime, popular with people of all ages. You can make your next camping trip pleasurable for all who participate when you have the right knowledge. After reading this article, you now have insights for how to make the most of your next camping trip.

You Can Lose It! | meizitang botanicalslimming

It can be daunting to think about losing weight, even if it is just a few pounds. In actuality, it isn?t as difficult as it seems. These weight loss tips will show you have to make the seemingly impossible, possible.

If you are attending an event or a party, eat a good sized meal before you get there. If you feel full, you are less likely to succumb to those fattening snacks being offered. Try drinking wine instead of high-calorie beer or mixed drinks.

Replace your serving of mayonnaise with mustard. Although it tastes good, even the smallest amount of mayonnaise is loaded with calories and fat. Try using mustard on your sandwich instead to cut down on calories. These are easy calories to cut from your diet and can be done simply by ordering or making foods without mayonnaise.

Tracking calories and eating healthy foods are the best ways to lose weight. Regular exercise and a healthy diet are needed to lose weight. When you take away all the gimmicks, dieting really comes down to burning more calories than one consumes.

Keep a log of your caloric intake. Go out and purchase and cheap spiral notebook or journal. Turn this notebook into a personalized food journal. Do not forget to include the amount of servings and calories from the food that you eat during the day. This can help you stay accountable for your eating habits and keep tabs on your diet overall.

When you feel the pangs of hunger, give yourself few minutes before you eat anything. You may feel hungry, but actually be thirsty or bored. When this happens, take a walk or drink some water. If you still feel hungry, then go ahead and eat something.

Keeping a food diary can help you reach your weight loss goals. It is not a necessity to count the calories. This is a good way to monitor how much food you eat everyday and when you eat it. You might eat more than you previously thought you did. Keeping up with the food you eat keeps you aware throughout the day. How guilty are you going to feel writing down the extra cookie?

Your body requires a certain amount of protein when losing weight, so look for low-fat, high-fiber sources like a three bean salad. You could create a low-calorie version easily at home. Open three cans of beans and lightly toss with a light Italian dressing. This a a great low calorie snack full of fiber that you can eat throughout the week.

If you plan your meals ahead, managing your weight loss goals will be much easier. Make a plan as to when you can eat your five or six small meals and pack them in a cooler so they are available when you need them.

Instead of making a goal weight, make a clothing size goal. Don?t be a slave to the scale. Each person carries their weight differently. Since everyone?s body is different, trying to hit a specific weight can cause needless anxiety. It is a better idea to concentrate on fitting into a particular clothing size.

Drinking ice water can help you on your weight loss journey. Introducing very cold water to your body will bring your core temperature down. Because your body is trying to recover the heat that it is losing, it will start burning fat. Replace all unhealthy drinks with water.

Avoiding weight gain while working at some jobs can be a tricky task. Many of today?s jobs involve a lot of sitting, which further promotes that sedentary lifestyle. Instead of delegating certain chores to an office assistant, take it upon yourself to get up and physically take care of it. Even this small amount of exercise will help you maintain a healthy weight.

It is proven that a bowl of cereal 5 times a week can help you to shed extra weight. Cereal gives you essential calcium as well as fiber that?s great for your heart. Although many cereals do not offer these types of healthful benefits, so avoid cereals like Cap?n Crunch and Fruit Loops. Look for cereals that are whole grain, high in fiber, and low in added sugar.

Put these ideas to work and start your weight loss program today. Don?t be discouraged if results do not arrive instantly; results will appear. Just keep moving, and continue to push toward your goals. You can lose weight, as long as you keep trying.

Norwegian earns internet stardom and an NFL tryout to boot

    POSTED: 01:30 a.m. HST, Dec 29, 2012

Havard Rugland does not have the pedigree one might expect for someone who has become an Internet sensation for kicking an American football. He knows next to nothing about the sport. Just ask him to name the quarterback of the New England Patriots or the Denver Broncos.

"I have no idea," said Rugland, a 28-year-old from Norway.

When asked how many yards an offense is penalized for a false start, Rugland paused. "I'd just be guessing," he finally admitted.

"Look, I don't know much about football," Rugland said by telephone from his home in Aalgaard, a small town near the southwestern coast of Norway. "But I'm fascinated by it. There's great athletes and speed and big hits. I thought it was interesting. So I wondered, What can I do?"

Using tools not typically associated with athletic prowess ? YouTube, Facebook, Skype and Gmail ? Rugland parlayed a homemade video that went viral into a tryout as a placekicker with the New York Jets last week. He might be the first professional prospect to replace college football experience with social media savvy.

In the four-minute video, posted in mid-September under the title "Kickalicious," the left-footed Rugland pulls off some of the most amusing tricks with a football since Lucy began duping Charlie Brown. And sometime between Tuesday night and Wednesday morning, it was viewed for the millionth time.

In one clip Rugland kicks the ball from a dock to someone in a canoe floating about 25 yards away. Twice. In another, he kicks the ball into the arms of someone standing through a car's sunroof. That might not seem so spectacular, except the car is cruising along a country road. The most eye-popping trick is saved for last. Rugland punts one ball high into the air and then quickly kicks a second ball off a tee. The balls collide in midair.

"That last kick, it took about eight tries," said Rugland, who added that coming up with creative ideas for kicks and punts was often tougher than executing them. "The basketball kick, I wanted it to go straight in, but it kept hitting the rim. That actually took a while. That could have been like 40 tries."

Rugland is so accurate on so many difficult kicks that his video almost seems too good to be true. It brings to mind doctored videos featuring other athletes, like one of the Los Angeles Lakers star Kobe Bryant leaping over a speeding Aston Martin (Bryant never would have risked his knees). But Rugland insists his video is real. (The could not independently verify this, though Rugland said that NRK, Norway's public broadcasting network, reviewed the raw videos and concluded they were legitimate.)

"I actually used Windows Movie Maker to edit the film," Rugland said. "The program isn't very good, so it actually crashed a few times. So it's kind of funny hearing people accusing me of things like, ?Oh, this is fake and it's easy to see.' I don't know how I would be able to try and do that."

Regardless of the video's legitimacy, Rugland ended up at the Jets' doorstep, quite an accomplishment for anyone, let alone a Norwegian who had never played football at any level. His journey to New York provides a blueprint of sorts for anyone looking to turn a homemade video into a global hit.

It all started when Rugland's club soccer team disbanded a year and a half ago. He began looking for another hobby to go along with his interest in video cameras. He got the bug for football after watching a live feed of the Super Bowl in the middle of the night. Rugland said he always had a booming leg in soccer and wondered if his talent would transfer to this new, obscure sport.

So Rugland went on the Internet and studied videos of placekickers. He also read up on kicking statistics. Asked to identify the longest field goal in NFL history, Rugland quickly answered: "Sixty-three yards by Janikowski, and Tom Dempsey in 1970. Didn't Akers do it this year when it hit the post and went over?"

Actually, David Akers' kick bounced off the crossbar, and Jason Elam also tied the record. But still.

With the assistance of two of his brothers and a friend, Rugland made the video in about five days in September. He said they did it for fun, bringing along a video camera whenever they went to the beach or took a drive. In the weeks after Rugland put the video online, it reached 5,000 hits, thanks mostly to friends of the four who reposted it on Facebook. That was 4,950 more hits than Rugland had expected. One of those viewers was Michael Husted, who kicked in the NFL for nine seasons. Husted, a kicking teacher, connected with Rugland on Facebook.

"I was just enamored by his size and his stature," Husted said of Rugland, who is 6 feet 2 inches and 242 pounds. "I thought there was some potential there. NFL teams like these big kickers."

Soon, Husted and Rugland began discussing the art of the trade over Skype.

In mid-October, NRK, the Norwegian television station, did a story on Rugland's minor celebrity. Within a week after the broadcast, Rugland said, the video reached 500,000 views. Soon his Gmail account was flooded with interest from small colleges like Henderson State University in Arkansas and Lincoln University in Missouri. In late November, Rugland received an email message from someone with more clout: Scott Cohen, assistant general manager of the Jets.

"Of course, my first thought was, ?Who of my friends have sent me this email?"' Rugland said. "I thought it was a joke."

After being assured by Rugland that he was serious about pursuing a career as a placekicker, Cohen suggested that he train for a few weeks with a kicking coach in the United States. Cohen even suggested a few names, including Husted.

"He had never seen a snap or a hold," Cohen said. "I told him, ?If you pay your way over here and work hard, I'll fly you to New York before you fly back to Norway."'

It was a significant cost for Rugland, who works as a counselor in a state-run facility for at-risk youths. But he had some vacation stored up and did not want to regret missing the next chapter of this surreal voyage. So he bought a ticket to San Diego, where Husted is based.

Husted is well connected in the fraternity of current and former NFL kickers. In addition to giving Rugland his first formal lesson on kicking in late November, he arranged to have Nate Kaeding, who signed with the Miami Dolphins recently, evaluate Rugland's technique.

"Put him out on the field with all of us NFL kickers, he's going to kick it as high and as far as the rest of us," said Kaeding, the most accurate field goal kicker in NFL history. "The way that he flights the ball and how he hits it, the pop he puts in it, is like a professional caliber. He can hit from 55, 60 yards."

Cohen was reluctant to give details about last week's workout but said the Jets also saw enough to conclude that Rugland had a chance to play in the NFL. Rugland said the Jets wanted him to return for a workout in March. He added that he planned to spend the next few months in Norway practicing field goals and kickoffs (he is leaving the trick shots behind).

Rugland has also hired an agent, Jill McBride Baxter, who represents a few kickers. She hopes Rugland can sign with an NFL team in the offseason and vie for a spot on a 53-man roster next season.

"After the Jets workout, I got a call from the Raiders," Baxter said. "And then Michael got a call from Green Bay and he got a call from Philadelphia," she said, referring to Husted. "So yeah, there's interest."

Still, Rugland remains an untested commodity. Kaeding said there was little room for creativity in kicking and noted that Rugland's lack of game experience was a glaring obstacle.

"There's a lot of emotion and psychological hurdles you have to navigate," Kaeding said. "In high school and college, you learn how to deal with the nuances of the position. He's fighting against time because he hasn't had that experience."

Rugland would not be the first Norwegian kicker to play in the NFL. Jan Stenerud, a Hall of Famer who played for the Chiefs, the Packers and the Vikings over 19 seasons, is also from Norway.

But even if the Jets tryout turns out to be Rugland's only taste of the NFL, he has broken new ground. He has managed to make kicking look sexy while bringing it to the masses in the 21st century.

"It's almost like the world has gotten a little bit smaller," Rugland said. "I have no background in American football. You couldn't be more green than me. I made a video and it's possible for America to watch it. And it ends up with a tryout with the Jets. And let's hope a lot more."
