The Spelling Bee
The Spelling Bee competition is an initiative of the English Opens Doors Program especially devoted to student?s linguistic development. The tournament, established in 2012, intends to provide students with an opportunity to build relationships among peers and compete with them in a friendly and fair atmosphere.
At the same time, this competition aims to motivate students to search and study about the English language. Further, it encourages them to spell words rapidly and correctly, demonstrating full comprehension of each word.
Why is it important to not only know how to spell the words, but also have depth of comprehension about the words?
Most researchers agree that a vocabulary of the 2000 most-frequent words is sufficient to understand approximately 80% of what is read or spoken. Therefore, knowing these words is a powerful way to increase overall comprehension of English. The consequence of this is greater enjoyment of and ability to use the English language for personal benefit and enrichment.
Public Speaking
The Public Speaking Competition, which started in 2008, is another initiative of the English Opens Doors Program (Programa Ingl?s Abre Puertas ? PIAP). It seeks to reinforce the students linguistic competence and oral communication in English. This is generally referred to as, ?communicative competence? by linguists. As an additional benefit, the competition fosters and develops the students eloquence in speaking as well as promotes their powers of persuasion, besides being an extraordinary way to have fun with English!

En la jornada, participar?n estudiantes de 6? a?o de Ense?anza B?sica representantes de ocho establecimientos de Calama, Antofagasta, Tocopilla y Toconao
A partir de las 10:00 horas del lunes 01 de Octubre, se llevar? a cabo, en la ciudad de Antofagasta, la Final Regional de la Competencia Spelling Bee. En esta ocasi?n se determinar? al establecimiento que representar? a la regi?n en la Final Zonal de esta competencia, que se llevar? a cabo en la Regi?n de Coquimbo. Los y las estudiantes de 6? a?o de Ense?anza B?sica de la regi?n han tenido una destacada participaci?n, llena de entusiasmo y motivaci?n, durante esta competencia que por primer a?o realiza el Programa Ingl?s Abre Puertas (PIAP).
Los(as) docentes han trabajado preparando con gran dedicaci?n y preocupaci?n a los y las estudiantes participantes, motiv?ndolos(as) a investigar y estudiar acerca del ingl?s, e interes?ndolos(as) por aprender a deletrear palabras en ese idioma de manera r?pida y precisa, demostrando comprensi?n. Los establecimientos que participar?n en esta etapa de la competencia son el Colegio Adventista, el Colegio Nuestra Se?ora de Ayquina, la Escuela B?sica Andr?s Bello y el Instituto Obispo Silva Lezaeta, todos ellos de Calama; el Liceo Marta Narea D?az y el Netland School, de Antofagasta; el Colegio Sagrada Familia, de Tocopilla; y la Escuela E-21 Toconao, de Toconao.
En esta ocasi?n, el jurado estar? conformado por Mariela Navarrete, Jefa de Carrera de la Universidad del Mar; Raquel Cea, profesora de ingl?s y Coordinadora de la Red de Docentes de Ingl?s de la comuna de Antofagasta; y Leticia D?az, profesora de ingl?s. La jornada contar? con la presencia de representantes de la SECREDUC de Antofagasta, directores(as), docentes de ingl?s y estudiantes de los establecimientos participantes, padres y apoderados.
?La competencia de Spelling Bee tuvo una gran acogida por parte de los estudiantes y docentes de la regi?n. Thomas Baker is the Past-President of TESOL Chile (2010-2011). He is the Head of the English Department at Colegio Internacional SEK in Santiago, Chile.
He is the Co-Founder and Co-Organiser of EdCamp Santiago, free, participant-driven, democratic, conversation based professional development for teachers, by teachers. EdCamp Santiago 2012 was held at Universidad Mayor in Santiago.
Thomas is also an ex-member (2011-2012) of the Advisory Board for the International Higher Education Teaching and Learning Association (HETL), where he also serves as a reviewer and as the HETL Ambassador for Chile.
Thomas was recently selected for membership in the Comunidad de Innovaci?n Escolar, from among hundreds of educators. The CIE promotes innovation, creativity and entrepreneurial-mindedness at the grass roots level, in the education community of its members, as well as in the wider education community.
