Power Play, Shorthanded Goal for Crimson
NEW HAVEN, Conn. ? Coming off a heartbreaking 5-4 overtime loss to Dartmouth Friday night, the Yale women's ice hockey team could not muster any more offense Saturday afternoon against No. 6 Harvard at Ingalls Rink. The Crimson got 12 saves from Emerance Maschmeyer to beat the Bulldogs 4-0, overshadowing a 44-save effort by Yale sophomore goalie Jaimie Leonoff.
Harvard (4-0-0, ECAC Hockey), which has now outscored its opponents 18-1 this season, put 20 shots on net in the first period to jump out to an early lead. Leonoff stopped 18 of those shots, with the only goals coming on a Crimson power play (a backhander by forward Jillian Dempsey at 11:17) and when Yale was caught in a line change (forward Lyndsey Fry on a rebound at 14:31).
After that Leonoff settled down and kept her team in the game with some spectacular saves. She stopped all 16 shots in the second period, but Yale put only two shots on Maschmeyer in that frame. Harvard finally extended the lead to 3-0 on another goal by Dempsey, her sixth of the year, at 8:53 of the third. She and Fry combined for 15 shots on goal for the game.
Three minutes later forward Kaitlyn Spurling's shorthanded goal made the score 4-0, and that was where it wound up staying. Harvard finished 1-for-4 on the power play, while Yale was 0-for-4.
Yale (1-5-0, 1-3-0 ECAC Hockey) travels to Clarkson and St. Lawrence next weekend.
