Hanover High School may have opened its brand new building this year, but they aren?t about to leave old traditions behind.
In tonight?s boys basketball game against Hingham (6:30 tipoff), Hanover will dedicate its gymnasium to former basketball coach Ed Amaral. The gym at the old building also was named after Amaral, who passed away in 1991 of prostate cancer.
Hanover athletic director Kristin Parnell never had the opportunity to meet Amaral, but she is still aware of the reputation the Hall of Fame coach left behind.
?People still talk about what a great teacher of both the game, and of life he was,? Parnell said. ?People here still have a lot of respect for him.?
Amaral amassed 244 career wins in stints at Cardinal Spellman and at Hanover, but it?s what he taught off the court that still resonates with his former players.
?He would always integrate life lessons into his coaching and his teaching,? said Alan Farrow, who played under Amaral at Hanover for two seasons in the early ?80s. ?I didn?t totally understand a lot of them until I was older, but those are the things that stick with you.?
The dedication of the gymnasium will help cement Amaral?s legacy as a basketball coach, but Farrow chooses to remember his former coach in a different light.
?He was a husband, a father, a friend ... and a coach last,? he said. ?He was the epitome of what you?d want your kids to be, and what you want to be.?
The dedication will take place at halftime of the basketball game, and Farrow is expecting a good turnout.
?I?ve talked to about 10-15 people that are all going to be there,? he said. ?It?s been more than 30 years since I played for Ed, so it just shows you what type of man he was.?
